TOPEKA, Kan. — The Kansas Sentencing Commission (KSSC) is pleased to announce that Arnold Ventures has agreed to fund the policy component of the Commission’s Comprehensive Review of the Kansas Sentencing Guidelines. This multi‑year initiative will support a rigorous, data‑driven evaluation of the state’s sentencing structure and develop practical, implementable options to promote long‑term public safety and fiscal stability.
Despite an active legislative session, Executive Director Scott Schultz and Research Director Dr. Carmen Diaz worked closely with the Council of State Governments (CSG) Justice Center to prepare and submit the funding application. Arnold Ventures’ support—anticipated to reach up to $600,000 over 24 months—will enable CSG to provide technical assistance throughout the project.
The review will focus on identifying policy options that slow projected prison population growth, stabilize corrections spending, and maintain public safety and accountability for serious crime. Findings and recommendations will be designed to guide legislative decision‑making during the 2028 session.
Executive Director Schultz noted, “This support positions the Commission to conduct the most comprehensive review of the sentencing guidelines since their creation. We are grateful for Arnold Ventures’ investment in evidence‑based policy development and for CSG’s continued collaboration.”
